Kauai Weddings & Elopements
The Garden Isle: Na Pali cliffs, Hanalei Bay, jungle waterfalls, and the most dramatic coastline in the Pacific. Kauai is where couples come when they want somewhere that genuinely doesn't look real.
Why Kauai
Na Pali Cliffs, Hanalei Bay, and Jungle Waterfalls
Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands, and it shows — deep river valleys, thousand-foot sea cliffs, dense jungle, and waterfalls that drop from clouds you can watch form above them. It's the least developed of the major islands, which means you can still find genuinely quiet places. That's rare in Hawaii.
I shoot Kauai elopements along the North Shore (Hanalei Bay, Tunnels Beach, Ke'e Beach) and the Na Pali Coast most often, but the island surprises you around every corner. Waimea Canyon offers a completely different palette — reds and oranges against deep greens that feel more like the Colorado Plateau than a Pacific island. Secret Beach gives you Kauai as most people never see it.
For couples who want Hawaii but not the full tourist infrastructure of Maui or Oahu — Kauai is your island. Quieter, wilder, more dramatic, and worth every bit of the journey.

Best Places to Get Married in Kauai
The venues and ceremony sites I've shot at most often, and why each one is worth considering for your day.
Hanalei Bay
Two miles of crescent beach backed by fluted green mountains. The most iconic view on the North Shore. Sunset light here is extraordinary — warm, golden, and different every single evening.
Na Pali Coast (Kalalau Trail)
The most dramatic coastline in Hawaii. The first two miles of the Kalalau Trail to Hanakapiai Beach are accessible without a camping permit. Emerald cliffs, crashing surf, and total isolation.
Secret Beach (Kauapea)
A long, secluded beach accessible via a short trail that keeps most tourists away. Dramatic backdrop of cliffs and lighthouse, with some of the most beautiful golden-hour light on the island.
Tunnels Beach (Haena)
Calm turquoise water, a stunning reef visible from shore, and the iconic fluted Makana peak rising behind it. One of Kauai's most photogenic beach locations for sunrise ceremonies.
Waimea Canyon
The Grand Canyon of the Pacific — 10 miles long, 3,600 feet deep, and utterly unlike anything else in Hawaii. Dramatic red and green canyon walls with waterfall views from the overlooks.
Limahuli Garden
A stunning botanical garden in a dramatic valley on the North Shore, managed by the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Lush, private, and surrounded by ancient taro terraces and jungle.
Grand Hyatt Kauai
The premier full-service resort on the South Shore with multiple ceremony locations, lagoon settings, lush grounds, and full wedding coordination. Ideal for full weddings with 50-200+ guests.
Ke'e Beach
At the end of the road on the North Shore, where the pavement stops and the Na Pali begins. Calm lagoon water, golden evening light, and mountains rising directly behind the beach.

Summer
May – September
Kauai's dry season. The North Shore is calm, clear, and perfect for beach ceremonies. Trade winds keep temperatures comfortable. Water visibility is at its best for any beach portraits.
Fall
October – November
Shoulder season with fewer visitors and lower rates. Weather is still largely dry. A good window for couples who want the experience without peak-season crowds and pricing.
Winter
December – March
North Shore beaches can see heavy surf (spectacular to photograph, but not for swimming ceremonies). South Shore stays calmer. Waterfalls are at peak flow after winter rains.
Spring
April – May
Transitional season with lush green landscapes after winter rains. The island is at its greenest. Humpback whales are departing through April. Good availability before summer peak.
Permits & Logistics
Getting Married in Kauai: What You Need to Know
Kauai beach and state park ceremonies require permits through the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and sometimes the State Parks office. Commercial photography in state parks requires a separate commercial use permit. Requirements vary by beach and location — some require permits for any gathering over 10 people, others are more flexible. The county also has regulations for weddings on county-managed beaches. I navigate all of this as part of the planning process so you know exactly what's needed for your chosen location.
Common Questions
Kauai Wedding & Elopement FAQ
How much does a Kauai elopement photographer cost?
+
Kauai elopement packages start at $4,995 for 4 hours of coverage. Travel fees apply for destinations outside the continental US — Kauai typically adds $800-1,500 for flights and lodging depending on timing. Full destination packages including multi-day coverage start at $7,500+. Every package includes planning support, location scouting, color-enhanced digital files, and a private online gallery.
Which side of Kauai is best for an elopement?
+
The North Shore (Hanalei, Haena, Na Pali) has the most dramatic landscapes and the most stunning light. The South Shore (Poipu, Grand Hyatt) has more reliable weather year-round and better options for full resort weddings. For elopements, I almost always recommend the North Shore — the scenery is unlike anything else in Hawaii.
What is the best time of year to elope in Kauai?
+
May through September is the dry season and the most reliable for North Shore ceremonies. October and November offer excellent conditions with fewer crowds. Winter brings heavier surf to the North Shore, which can look incredible in photos but limits beach ceremony options — the South Shore remains calmer year-round.
Do we need a permit to get married on a Kauai beach?
+
Yes. Kauai beach weddings require a permit from the Hawaii DLNR or the county, depending on the specific beach. Some locations also require commercial photography permits. The good news is that the process is manageable and I help all of my Kauai couples navigate it. Plan to submit permit applications 30-60 days in advance.
Can we incorporate a helicopter or boat into our elopement?
+
Absolutely — and it's spectacular. Helicopter tours of the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon are one of the most breathtaking additions possible. Some tour operators allow a small ceremony at a remote waterfall landing. Catamaran sunset sails along the coast are another beautiful option. I've worked with several operators on Kauai and can make recommendations.
