Glacier National Park Elopements

The Crown of the Continent. A million acres of jagged peaks, turquoise alpine lakes, and some of the most dramatic landscapes in North America — often called America's most beautiful national park.

Why Glacier National Park

Lake McDonald, Many Glacier, and Going-to-the-Sun Road

Glacier National Park is the most visually spectacular park in the American West — a million acres of peaks scraped sharp by Pleistocene glaciers, lakes so turquoise they look filtered, and meadows exploding with wildflowers in July. It's also one of the most remote — genuinely far from major cities, which keeps crowd pressure lower than parks like Yosemite or Zion.

I've photographed Glacier elopements at every major access point. Lake McDonald on the west side is the iconic reflective lake (the colorful stones on the shore are instantly recognizable). Many Glacier on the east side is arguably more dramatic — sharper peaks, more remote, less trafficked. Going-to-the-Sun Road connects the two over Logan Pass at 6,646 feet with ceremony pull-offs that look unreal.

For couples who want peak American mountain scenery and don't mind a longer travel day to get there, Glacier is unmatched. Every frame looks like a landscape painting.

Best Places to Get Married in Glacier National Park

The venues and ceremony sites I've shot at most often, and why each one is worth considering for your day.

01

Lake McDonald

The park's largest lake and the iconic west-side setting. Multicolored lake stones along the shore, reflective water in morning calm, and ceremony sites at Apgar Village and Lake McDonald Lodge. Easy access, permit required.

02

Many Glacier

East-side basin with the sharpest peaks in the park — Mount Grinnell, Mount Gould, and Swiftcurrent Peak. Many Glacier Hotel is a historic 1915 chalet-style lodge. Among the most dramatic wedding settings in the country.

03

Going-to-the-Sun Road

50-mile alpine highway crossing the park west to east over Logan Pass. Multiple scenic pullouts serve as ceremony spots — Jackson Glacier Overlook, Oberlin Bend, and Logan Pass itself. Road open late June to mid-October.

04

Two Medicine

A quieter southeast corner of the park with Two Medicine Lake, Running Eagle Falls, and direct access to serious hiking. Far fewer crowds than Lake McDonald or Many Glacier — genuine solitude for ceremonies.

05

Lake McDonald Lodge

A historic Swiss-chalet-style lodge on Lake McDonald's east shore. Full wedding accommodations, direct lake access for ceremonies, and one of the most architecturally beautiful lodges in any national park.

06

Many Glacier Hotel

Built in 1915 as a Great Northern Railway chalet, directly on Swiftcurrent Lake with Grinnell Point rising across the water. Among the most iconic hotel settings in any US national park.

07

St. Mary Lake & Wild Goose Island

The image from the opening of The Shining — Wild Goose Island in the middle of St. Mary Lake with peaks rising behind. Beautiful at sunrise, and just off Going-to-the-Sun Road for easy access.

Live conditions update every time the page loads. Check this widget close to your date for real-time planning.

Summer

July – August

Peak season. All roads open, wildflower peak mid-to-late July, and the most reliable weather. Also the busiest — permits and lodging require early booking. Going-to-the-Sun Road typically fully opens by July 1.

Fall

September – October

My favorite season for Glacier — crowds thinning, fall color in the aspen and larch, and often dramatic weather. Going-to-the-Sun typically closes mid-to-late October. Wildlife (bears, elk, moose) highly active before winter.

Winter

December – April

Most of the park closed except for access to Apgar and Lake McDonald's west shore. Cross-country ski and snowshoe access only beyond. Dramatic but limited — most winter weddings happen outside the park in Whitefish or Kalispell.

Spring

May – June

Transitional. Going-to-the-Sun Road plowing operation begins — road opens progressively from late May through late June depending on snow. Lake McDonald and Apgar accessible earlier. Variable weather but far fewer visitors.

Permits & Logistics

Getting Married in Glacier National Park: What You Need to Know

Glacier National Park requires a Special Use Permit for weddings, including small elopements. Permits cost $125 and must be submitted at least 30 days in advance. Group sizes are limited by location — most sites allow up to 12 guests, some allow more. Commercial photography permits are separate and required. Private lodge ceremonies (Lake McDonald Lodge, Many Glacier Hotel) are handled by the concessioner. I coordinate all permits and handle the application process as part of planning.

Common Questions

Glacier National Park Wedding & Elopement FAQ

How much does a Glacier National Park elopement photographer cost?

+

Glacier elopement packages start at USD $4,995 for 4 hours of coverage. Travel from Colorado adds $800-1,500. Multi-day packages covering multiple park areas start at $8,000+. Every package includes planning consultation, permit coordination, color-enhanced digital files, and a private online gallery.

When is Going-to-the-Sun Road open?

+

Going-to-the-Sun Road is the park's main east-west route and is only fully open for approximately 3 months per year. Typical window: late June through mid-October, depending on snow. Lower elevation sections (Apgar to Lake McDonald Lodge, St. Mary to Rising Sun) open earlier and close later. Check the park's current-year plowing status when planning dates.

Do we need a permit to elope in Glacier National Park?

+

Yes. All weddings in Glacier National Park require a Special Use Permit, even for just the two of you. Applications take 30+ days to process and must specify a location. Popular ceremony sites (especially along Going-to-the-Sun Road) have limited availability during peak season. I help all of my Glacier couples apply for the correct permit as part of planning.

Where do we fly in for a Glacier wedding?

+

Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell is the closest commercial airport, about 30 minutes from the west entrance. Flights from major hubs including Denver, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Salt Lake. Missoula Airport (MSO) is an alternative at 2.5 hours. Most destination guests use FCA.

What's the best time of year to elope in Glacier?

+

Mid-July through mid-September offers the best combination of access (roads open) and weather reliability. Mid-to-late September is my personal favorite — fall larch color in the high country, thinning crowds, and dramatic light. Avoid May, early June, and November — very limited access during those windows.
