Most people never see Yosemite in winter. The park is quiet, the valley is often dusted in snow, waterfalls freeze mid-cascade, and the crowds that swarm the park from May through October are completely gone. Winter Yosemite elopements are my favorite kind of Yosemite wedding because the park essentially belongs to you. It's also the most honest answer to the question "when should I elope in Yosemite?" — whenever you want an empty park with dramatic light and genuine solitude.

Why Winter Yosemite Elopements Work
Winter weddings in National Parks are rare because most couples assume the weather makes them impractical. That's only partially true. Yes, it's cold. Yes, some roads are closed. But the tradeoffs are massively in your favor if you're willing to embrace the season.

What to Expect in Winter Yosemite
- 1
Yosemite Valley is typically accessible
The valley floor stays open year-round. Roads are plowed. All major in-park lodging is open. You can drive to Tunnel View, Cathedral Beach, and most valley ceremony locations in winter.
- 2
Glacier Point Road is closed
Glacier Point, Taft Point, and Sentinel Dome are all inaccessible by car in winter. Glacier Point Road typically closes in late October or early November and reopens in late May. Plan your ceremony location accordingly.
- 3
Tioga Road (to Tuolumne Meadows) is closed
The high country is completely inaccessible from approximately November through late May. For winter elopements, everything happens in or near the valley.
- 4
Snow conditions vary
Some winters the valley stays mostly snow-free with just frosty mornings. Other winters (especially January and February) bring 1-3 feet of fresh snow that transforms the valley into a completely different landscape. Both are beautiful.
- 5
Waterfalls may be frozen
Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Falls, and other seasonal waterfalls often freeze partially or completely in winter. The resulting ice formations are dramatic and unique to the season.

Best Winter Yosemite Ceremony Locations
- 1
Cathedral Beach
Valley floor meadow beneath El Capitan. Always accessible. The oak trees get dusted with snow, the river stays open, and El Cap towers above in winter conditions. My top recommendation.
- 2
Tunnel View
Classic postcard view. Accessible by car year-round. A quick ceremony here can work well for couples who want minimal hiking in winter conditions.
- 3
Swinging Bridge
Riverside location with Yosemite Falls in the background (often frozen in winter). Easy access, photogenic in any season.
- 4
The Majestic Yosemite Hotel (Ahwahnee)
Indoor ceremony option if the weather turns bad. The historic grand hall is particularly dramatic in winter with decorated fireplaces and big-window views of the snowy valley outside.
- 5
Curry Village / Half Dome Village
Base-level valley location with direct Half Dome views. Often snow-covered in winter and significantly less crowded than summer.
Planning a Winter Yosemite Elopement
- 1
Book lodging in the valley
Yosemite Valley Lodge, Curry Village, and The Majestic all stay open in winter. Being inside the park eliminates the risk of getting stuck outside during a storm. Book 3-6 months in advance for the best rates.
- 2
Apply for your Special Use Permit
Required for every ceremony in the park, including winter. Process is the same as other seasons. Permit office is less backed up in winter, so turnaround is often faster.
- 3
Check Tioga Pass and park road status
Tioga Pass is closed all winter. Park roads within the valley are plowed and generally open, but storm closures happen. Check nps.gov/yose for current conditions before your date.
- 4
Plan for cold weather gear
Valley daytime highs are typically 35-55°F in winter. Nights drop to 20-35°F. Bring warm layers under your ceremony attire. A wrap or heavy coat for pre-ceremony warmth. Hand warmers. Boots for walking in snow.
- 5
Hire a photographer who has shot Yosemite in winter before
Winter photography in Yosemite has specific challenges — short daylight, dramatic exposure shifts between snow and granite, cold gear behavior, and condensation issues when moving between indoor and outdoor. Experience matters.
FAQ: Winter Yosemite Elopements
Can I get married in Yosemite in winter?
+
Yes. Yosemite Valley remains accessible year-round, and ceremony locations like Cathedral Beach, Tunnel View, and Swinging Bridge are all available in winter. You'll need the same Special Use Permit required for any season.
What's the cheapest season to elope in Yosemite?
+
Winter (December through early March) is typically the cheapest. In-park lodging rates drop 30-50% from peak summer. Many vendors offer off-season pricing. Photography prices stay the same, but availability is much better.
Is Glacier Point accessible in winter?
+
No. Glacier Point Road closes in late October or early November each year and doesn't reopen until late May. For winter elopements, all ceremony locations are in the valley floor.
What if it snows on my wedding day?
+
Fresh snow in Yosemite is magical for photography, but it can complicate logistics. I always build weather contingencies into the timeline — backup indoor locations, flexible start times, and multiple ceremony site options. Snow itself is usually a bonus, not a problem.
How cold does it get in Yosemite Valley in winter?
+
Valley daytime highs are typically 35-55°F December through February. Nights drop to 20-35°F. It's cold but manageable with proper layering. The rim of the valley (Glacier Point) gets much colder and is closed to vehicle access.
